Denali National Park is an adventurer’s paradise and its proximity to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park makes it a great addition to your trip. The park’s 6 million acres of wilderness are bisected by a proverbial long and winding road that has a lot to offer, and McCarthy Lodge is committed to helping you make the most of your Alaska adventure – regardless of how far you roam.
Denali: A Mountain and More
Denali National Park is home to Denali – federally designated as Mount McKinley – which stands at more than 20,000 feet, making it North America’s tallest peak. When it comes to the natural wonders of the park, however, we’re just getting started. If you want your wilderness served with a side of solitude and tranquility, you’ve come to the right place.
In fact, Denali has only one road entrance and only that one road running through it, which is paved for only the first 15 miles – ending at Savage River. From here, you can proceed on either a non-narrated transit bus that allows you the flexibility to embark and disembark on your schedule and to enjoy the park on your own terms or a narrated tour bus that affords passengers a more programmed view.
All told, there is a 92-mile stretch of mostly dirt and gravel road that runs from the east entrance to the west and is called the Denali Park Road – or simply the park road. You’ll begin in a low, forested country but will proceed through breathtaking mountain passes and along some steep mountainsides. Best tip: Get on the very first early bus to see the most wildlife!
Denali Highlights
When it comes to exploring, there’s virtually no limit in Denali National Park, but you’re encouraged to include the following on your list:
- Scope out brilliant views of Denali – and put your photography skills to work.
- Take a hike. While there are a few marked trails near the park’s entrance, there are plenty of opportunities for off-trail hiking throughout. When heading off-trail, however, you should always make safety your top priority, which includes knowing what to expect.
- Embark on an overnight backpacking adventure. You’ll need to obtain a backcountry permit no more than one day prior to your trip, but they’re free and easily accessible.
- Camp at one of the park’s many campgrounds. There are even RV options up to the point of the Savage River Campground. If your schedule isn’t super flexible, it’s advisable to make reservations for either RV or tent camping well ahead of time.
- Enjoy the wildlife, including grizzlies, black bears, caribou, wolves, moose, Dall sheep, and a wide range of birds that attract bird watchers from far and wide.
